7 steps to uncovering the money blocks holding you back from the salary you deserve

Before looking for a new job with a higher salary you need to address these mindset issues

If you’re like 99% of people your mind is a battleground of ongoing warfare.

The warfare I’m talking about here is between where you are right now and where you want to go.

Standing between you and 6- or 7- figures in your bank account are doubts about deserving, fear of failure and lack of confidence.

These constant question marks (Is it reasonable to want to earn more? Should I settle for what I have? What if I get a new job but it’s worse than where I am now?) create a self-fulfilling prophecy of anxiety and scarcity.

Therefore if you desire to make more money you need to start with a mindset shift even BEFORE you can hope to get that new job that will double or triple your income.

Here are some things you can do to cultivate a strong money mindset that will get the ball rolling towards that target salary in no time.

1 – Create your dream budget

Many people have a preconceived notion about not being able to afford things because they are not there yet and that one day when they’re rich they can buy this or that. When you create your dream budget what you’ll find is that there’s actually a lot you can afford right now.

It’s acceptable to keep increasing your dream budget. There are probably mini dreams you can already afford without realizing it. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR??

Here’s a silly example: as a student, I would cut my hair as little as possible to save $$. Yet recently looking at my dream budget and asking myself “if money were no object what would I spend on?” I saw that if I could afford anything regular haircuts would be a part of my life. Well, I had to admit to myself that I can afford regular haircuts. So why am I not doing it?!

Similarly, I have a friend who had a huge block around upgrading her cushions because the old ugly ones still work. Once she released the block and embraced deserving fabulous new cushions that made her happy she started feeling more luxurious in her home and her bank account soon grew.

Or maybe it’s a dream luxury getaway. Maybe you can already afford that, but you’re still waiting for that “one day” to come. Do it now!

If your dream budget includes something totally unnecessary and consumeristic… so what?

Why are you so focused on needs vs wants? Is your goal to survive in life or to live the dream?

Of course, you have people who live too much on the other end of the spectrum who spend everything on the now and invest nothing into their future.

But stop saving for a rainy day and start looking for ways to make the dream happen.

Get into construction mode not waiting mode.

Take out your best cutlery. Don’t wait for the Queen to come for dinner.

Instead of “Save, save, save” or “This thing still works, why get a new one??” Think to yourself: “You know what would make me happy?” New towels. Go and get it! Upgrade things you have in a way that makes you happy.

So what’s in your dream budget? Type it below.

2- Write a letter to money

Change your money story. How strong is your belief that you can make it to your dream budget? When you think of this number do you kind of laugh at yourself? Or does it create a pit in your stomach because you feel a failure even setting it as a goal?

Some people have beliefs that restrict them from growing, doubts like ‘I’m just a woman from a small town, not a big businessman’ stop you from reaching your goals.

Uncover those limiting beliefs!

(BTW We discussed some of them in a recent Q&A in my Facebook group so go back to that if you haven’t watched it yet at the link here. You’ll need to click “Join group” to access it)

Also in your letter make sure to FORGIVE yourself for past money mistakes. Everyone is bound to make some. But as long as you continue to focus on the goal they will eventually fade into bumps along the road vs some gigantic life failure that keeps you in frugality mode for the rest of your life.

Stop looking backwards.

3- Ask the right questions

Always check yourself before you wreck yourself.

When certain limiting questions pop up in your mind, immediately turn them around.

Instead of asking yourself: “Will I ever be able to afford a home? ” ask yourself: “what will my dream home look like?”

Instead of “Why am I always broke?” ask yourself: ”How can I have a large amount of money in my bank account?”

It may be difficult in the beginning to start treating yourself as though you deserve the best.

It will feel weird to start assuming you’re destined for greatness. But eventually it will all become your natural state and you’ll find employers start to value you more once you make it a habit of valuing yourself.

4- NEVER say “I can’t afford it”

Stay in an abundance mode and watch out for scarcity – and not just when it comes to money, job opportunities, etc.

Always think there are plenty, for instance, if there are few jobs, tell yourself: yes there are few openings in this industry but someone has to get the position, and why not me?

It’s ok to feel great when you spend on something you love that’s aligned with your values and where you’re going in life.

Even if it’s an unnecessary expense. Always feel grateful and excited you’re spending this money on yourself or your family.

Get comfortable with fears and discomfort.

5- Surround yourself with the right peers

If all your friends are all broke that becomes your normal. You’ll either have pity parties over how little you earn or feel high and mighty together for being frugal and saving $10 in coupons.

And you’ll all stay broke together.

It’s so important to surround yourself by who you want to become.

Expand your network to people who earn more than you.

6-Change your environment

Have a constant reminder – use a token, something to remind you of your financial goals.

It could be some coins in a jar, something gold, a photo of what you’re saving for or anything luxurious to you.

7- Have an action plan

Invest in yourself, upgrade and become a mastermind of your own life. It’s not a quick fix or an easy tip, but it’s possible. You don’t want to be one of those people who gets a paycheck and complains about how low it is.

Remember to make money FUN, remind yourself that you have plenty enough already and get excited for more.

In order to earn a top salary, you need to be positioned as a specialist, have the right branding, network, and access to opportunities.

But none of those tactics work unless you are actually open to earning more and believe you deserve it first and foremost.
